Autobiographical Reflections from my Hobby World of the "Crazy Rubber Band" and the "Rover 3500cc Twin Plenum Vitesse"

Covering a Fuselage with Silk using the Meniscus Doping Method
Covering a Fuselage with Silk using the Meniscus Doping Method magnify

A question frequently asked on the flying field is about my choice covering material for rubber model fuselages. It’s not surprising because silk is an attractive medium with a slightly mythical status. Oiled silk was a covering of choice in a bye-gone era, later replaced by tissues like modelspan and jap, which in turn were outmoded by a variety of junk-spans that, for the most part, seem singularly unsuitable for rubber models, relying as they do on a tight covering to sustain torsional strength.

This is not the first time the process has been explained on the digital highway but perhaps not in this detail. It is pretty much as I learned it from Mike Kemp who first wrote about it in the August 1984 Sam35Speaks Rubber Column. Mike learned it from Peter Michel, who learned it from David Baker who learned it from Danny (two e's if you please) Sheelds who learned it from ….

And now everybody can learn it from here. I would add however that yours truly does not expect too many of our fraternity to actually try this method as there seems to be less and less interest in these esoteric art-forms. However, included in the process is an amazing secret that one can only share, in reality, by following the process and waiting several years. Confused? Then read or download the process from this PDF link:

"Senator" 1950 Vintage Duration Model by Albert Hatfull
"Senator" 1950 Vintage Duration Model by Albert Hatfull magnify

I have built four Senators since the early 1980’s. The first three were lost in competition but not all to fly-aways. The last one nearly drowned in the River Isis at Oxford before being rescued by a canoeist and immediately stolen from the riverbank by a passer-by. Even with a radio tracker on board I could not trace the model, although rumor has it, that it finished up in an Oxford Pub and resides there still.

Today’s “Senator” has a flying performance that probably exceeds by a considerable margin, that perceived or achieved by the designer and his contemporary flyers.

Here is my personal reflection on this great model airplane yet it hardly scratches the surface of its universal appeal. It’s easy to build, easy to trim and easy to fly, with no serious vices, apart from absenteeism. It will hold its own at any competitive level, and in the hands of expert contest flyers it is a truly awesome performer.

"Voodoo" 1950 8 oz Wakefield by Ron Warring
"Voodoo" 1950 8 oz Wakefield by Ron Warring magnify

“Voodoo” was one of the more famous British post-war Wakefield designs by Ron Warring. Known as “The Witchdoctor” because of his unique ROG launching style he was arguably the greatest among his British contemporaries and probably unlucky never to have won the Wakefield Trophy.

His famous design was the last in a line of truly competitive models before the rules changed in 1951. I built my version in 1985 and am still flying the same model 21 years later.

For me, “Voodoo” was a watershed choice of model as it marked the start of a gradual departure from flying power models until in 1987 with several other rubber models added to my stable I gave up on internal combustion and concentrated totally on the Crazy Rubberband.

SAM Euro Champs - Little Rissington: 28-30 August 2006
SAM Euro Champs - Little Rissington: 28-30 August 2006 magnify

The 2006 SAM Euro Champs took place at Little Rissington this year, instead of the traditional venue of Middle Wallop.

This move of venue and the appalling weather forecast kept the turnout down and the hardy souls who braved the elements, particularly the first two days, were confronted with some challenging conditions and arduous retrieves.

This is my personal account and observations of the Crazy Rubberband events as they unfolded. Read or download the story in PDF format from this link:

Also available from this page are all the results from the meeting including those for power and glider events. With acknowledgement to the SAM 1066 Results Service, who published them on their home web-site, I have retabulated them and presented them in PDF form for easy reading and downloading.
