News About Photo Sharing on Yahoo!

I know some of you have been frustrated lately with problems sharing your Yahoo! Photos on Yahoo! 360°. A couple folks even contacted me directly, pointing out that they switched to Flickr and found it much more satisfying. Others wrote in, wondering why we had two photo sharing services -- isn't one enough? By focusing on a single photo service, they reasoned, wouldn't it make life easier for us all by doing one thing (and doing it really, really well)?

Well, as you may have heard, Yahoo! Photos is shutting its doors soon. And in the process, we’re making it easy for people to move their pictures from photos.yahoo.com to other photo sharing sites, including Flickr. This also now includes the Flickr transition for people who use international versions of Yahoo! Photos (especially since we’ve also recently launched Flickr in seven languages).

If you already have a Flickr account, you know that Flickr makes it easy to manage and share your photos. It also gives you lots of ways to find and explore interesting pictures from the Flickr community. And if you prefer to share your photos only with friends and family, Flickr offers a number of privacy controls.

If you don't already have a Flickr account, now is a great time to set one up. I think the Yahoo! Photos users who choose Flickr are going to have fun with it (and will enjoy being part of the Flickr community). If you want to share pictures with your friends on Yahoo! 360°, I'd recommend using Flickr. It's easy. Really easy.

If you don’t currently use Yahoo!

Hi all, I am Cathy, your new Yahoo! 360º Community Outreach Executive. Thank you for visiting this blog post and I am very honoured to be part of your community!

The title of this blog is Arts in Everyday Life. Have you noticed how the Internet can be an amazing medium for us to share arts? Thanks to the advance of the Internet, artistic expressions are no longer confined to canvasses but can exist in virtually any forms.

Our recent selected Yahoo! People of the Web, Phil Hansen, shows us that we are only limited by our imagination,

An art school dropout, Hansen works as an X-ray technician by day, spending all of his spare time and money on his art. But his work, and his method of presenting it, has given him a huge audience.

His breakthrough piece was a time-lapse video of a two-day project called "Influences." He painted 30 pictures on his own chest, one over the other, with each picture representing an influence in his life. When he was done, he peeled the quarter-inch thick layer of paint from his skin and cut out a silhouette of his own profile. The video was streamed more than a million times on the Web — a cyber art phenomenon in which both process and final piece were revealed.

For those who are curious, please visit Yahoo! Can you tell us about your first arts experience? Was it the first time you had your arts lesson at school?
It seems to be impossible to ignore Harry Potter at the moment, but I'm actually quite excited about the next film - Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix as it's the only Harry Potter book I've read. I'm sure that true Potter fans will tell me that I should have read them from the start and that if you're only going to read one Harry Potter book read "Harry Potter and the XXXXXX" - is that the case?

I'm sure we have a number of Harry Potter fans in 360° land, if so can you tell us why you love the books so much?

But generally, do the films of books still have the same appeal for you? Whenever I've enjoyed reading a book, I inevitably feel let down by the film - mainly as I have a mental picture in my head of the characters and often a film may be "Hollywooded" out of recognition. Chocolat for example had a happy ending whereas the book didn't have a happy finale.

Have you ever seen a film that was better than the book it was based upon? I'm going back years and years now, but I loved the film The Remains of the Day, but only thought the book was average. So perhaps in the hands of a great director and cast, films can sometimes be better than the original book.

Once again, thanks for sharing your thoughts

– Mecca
Product Manager, Yahoo! 360°

360° gives you some freedom with your online personality. Under your Basic Info Settings, you can adopt a nickname (and therefore not display your Yahoo! ID/real name to the public).

Some people get very creative with this. Your online nickname can make you sound funny like Mrs Swampy or Spotty or Little Devil, or fun and approachable like Fun Girl UK or Real Nutty Bird. We have a lot of the community who use their pets' or animals' names in their online nicknames, variations on Kitty or the more unusual Hotclaws. Some people change their nickname to suit their mood or commemorate a holiday. We've seen a number of nautical ones like piR8 maybe in celebration of "Talk Like a Pirate Day".

Maybe there's a story behind your nickname. Was it a seasonal one which just stuck? Is it something that your friends and family call you or just your online persona? Do any of your 360° friends have particularly unusual nicknames?

Once again thanks for sharing.

– Mecca (not a nickname)
    Product Manager, Yahoo! 360°
